Cleaning Your Night Guard

If you grind your teeth, you’re most likely familiar with night guards. Prescribed to protect your teeth from the damage that results from teeth grinding or bruxism. With three locations in Phoenix, AZ, Kidz Connextion offers expert care for teeth grinding, including night guard care. Here are a few tips and tricks for night guard hygiene.

Night guards are usually made from acrylic or hard plastic. Since these mouthguards are meant to be worn for long periods of time, it’s important to sanitize them properly. Dirty night guards are home to breeding grounds for dangerous bacteria that wreak havoc on your oral health.

The best way to wash your night guard is under lukewarm water and mild soap. Since night guards are removable, they’re easier to clean. However, the interior surfaces of the acrylic appliance are harder to disinfect. Use a toothbrush or cotton swab to gently scrub the inside of the night guard.

Your Phoenix, AZ dentists advise sanitizing night guards soon as you remove them. When dry, bacteria and debris are harder to unclog on the surface of retainers.

In general, night guards need to be handled gently to preserve for long-term use. This means staying away from any harsh cleaners and rough scrubbing.

If you want a deeper clean for your night guard or notice bacteria stuck on the surface, bring your device to Kidz Connextion for special cleaning.

6 Tips to Improve Your Smile

Your smile is key to making a good first impression. That’s why your dentists at Kidz Connextion are passionate about improving patients’ smiles at their three Phoenix, AZ locations one mouth at a time. Here are six ways to transform your smile today!

Proper Hygiene

Regularly flossing and brushing your teeth is a no brainer for keeping your smile beautiful and healthy. Without proper care, your molars will rot and decay. Invest in a good quality toothbrush for use twice a day. Try to rinse your mouth with water after every meal to remove any lingering debris in your molars. Forming good habits like this will take you far in achieving the pearly smile you dream of!

Eating Healthy
It’s no secret that sugary drinks and junk food have a big impact on your teeth. If you want a beautiful smile, it’s best to stay away from unhealthy foods. A little candy or soft drink is fine here and there, but don’t let your sugar tooth run loose.  Too much sugar results in everything to avoid for a pretty smile: cavities, tooth decay, enamel, and gum erosion, and much more.

Avoid Foods That Stain
Coffee, red wine, and even tomatoes are just some of the many foods that stain your natural teeth hue. But, you don’t have to ditch the drink right away. Instead, opt for a straw when you sip and rinse after consuming.

Teeth Whitening and Cleaning
Some teeth stains are unavoidable and that’s where your Phoenix, AZ dentists come in. To return your teeth to their natural color, we offer free teeth whitening for all new and insured patients at our dental offices.  We’re passionate about your oral health, so our convenient cleaning and dental hygiene sessions allow for a whiter shinier smile.

Canker Sores 101

Canker sores are irritating wounds in your mouth that make chewing, talking, and even moving your jaw incredibly painful. But you don’t have to suffer forever. With three locations in Phoenix, AZ, Kidz Connextion specializes in all things relating to the mouth, including canker sores. Here’s everything you need to know about canker sores.

What Do Canker Sores Look Like?

Canker sores or mouth ulcers emerge as small shallow open wounds in the mouth. Usually appearing under the lips, tongue, or inside the cheeks, canker sores are red with a thin grey, yellow or white film.

There are three types of canker sores: minor, major, and herpetiform sores. Minor canker sores are the most common type of mouth ulcer. Major and herpetiform sores are rarer, both with longer healing periods Major canker sores may scar as they heal.

Causes

We don’t know exactly what causes canker sores, but your Phoenix, AZ dentists rounded up some potential triggers:

Stress
Physical trauma like rough brushing, biting, or metal braces scratching around the gum line

Poor dental hygiene

Acidic and spicy foods
Nutritional deficiencies like vitamin B12
Sodium lauryl sulfate, commonly used in toothpaste

Treatment

Canker sores aren’t serious and certainly not contagious. Usually, these ulcers heal within 7-10 days, but if you get persistent canker sores or experience extreme pain, contact our office for an appointment today.

Your Guide to Toothpaste

With thousands of toothpaste brands on the market, it’s overwhelming to find a toothpaste that best fits your needs. That’s why your Phoenix, AZ dentists at Kidz Connextion created a simple guide for navigating the world of dental hygiene. Here’s everything you need to know about toothpaste.

Know Ingredients

Most toothpaste brands use the same active ingredients in their formula. If you know you’re allergic or sensitive to a few ingredients, it’s helpful to be aware of what you’re putting in your mouth beforehand.

For example, sodium lauryl sulfate, common in many tubes of toothpaste is known to trigger canker sores. If you’re prone to mouth ulcers like canker sores, it’s best to stay away from brands that use this ingredient.

Fluoride is another ingredient to know. An essential component to look for when purchasing toothpaste, fluoride fights tooth decay and strengthens the enamel. However, younger children should only use a tiny amount when brushing. Too much fluoride exposure during the first eight years of a child’s life leads to a cosmetic condition called fluorosis.

Check for ADA Approval

The American Dental Association (ADA) evaluates every dental product on the market using strict guidelines of safety and effectiveness. The official ADA seal on an item means it’s trusted by your Phoenix, AZ dentist.

Types of Toothpaste

The most important function of toothpaste is to fight cavities. Besides this purpose, it’s your preference for selecting a brand that targets additional oral health problems like:

-Sensitivity issues

-Whitening

-Bad breath

-Tartar control

-Allergies: Natural or organic toothpaste was invented as an additive-free option for dental hygiene. These products work the same as regular toothpaste but their mild contents are suitable for people with oral allergies.

Do You Have Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

For some, growing wisdom teeth is a ball in the park. For others, it can be an uncomfortable experience. While it’s normal to feel some pain and soreness as a wisdom tooth comes in, continuous pain may mean you have an impacted tooth and require an extraction. At Kidz Connextion located in Phoenix, AZ, we provide safe and effective wisdom tooth extractions. But first, let’s take a look at what it means to have an impacted wisdom tooth.

What Is an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

Wisdom teeth typically grow in the 17-25 age years, emerging in the upper and lower back areas of the mouth. If a wisdom tooth can’t break through the gums or is stuck under the gums, this means your tooth is impacted. A wisdom tooth that grows at the wrong angle due to lack of room in the mouth also is impacted. Some wisdom teeth, known as partially impacted teeth, only slightly emerge in the gums. When food is trapped under the gum flap or operculum of a partially inflamed tooth, you risk a potentially dangerous health condition called pericoronitis.

Symptoms

Some impacted teeth may never need removal because they don’t have any dental problems. Others lead to serious infections like pericoronitis if not treated right away. If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, contact our office in Phoenix, AZ immediately for an appointment:

Bleeding gums

Bad breath

Severe pain

Trouble opening the jaw

Swelling

Pus discharge

Treatment

At Kidz Connextion, we value making our patients feel safe and comfortable during all procedures. This includes extractions for impacted wisdom teeth. Your dentist will determine your full range of options including extraction site preservation and operculum cleaning before extraction takes place.

Kidz Connextion has three convenient locations in Phoenix, Arizona. To schedule an appointment at 2533 N 75th St, text 623-232-0749. For our office at 2046 N 24th St, text 480-666-5984. For our office at 524 E Baseline Rd, text 480-405-4714. Or, visit Kidz Connextion on our website.

Mouthwash 101

Mouthwash has been around since the beginning of the Roman empire thousands of years ago. Today, many people include mouthwash in their dental routine to feel fresh and clean. At Kidz Connextion located in Phoenix, AZ, our dentists are passionate about oral health, including the importance of mouthwash. Here’s everything you need to know about mouthwash.

Mouthwash Can’t Cure Bad Breath

Halitosis or bad breath refers to the condition where bacteria grows in your body or mouth, resulting in stinky breath. While mouthwash does transform your breath into a minty fresh, it only masks the smelly odor temporarily. Bad breath is typically an underlying symptom of many health problems such as poor hygiene, gum disease, infection, or chronic illnesses.

Mouthwash Doesn’t Replace Brushing or Flossing

Contrary to popular belief, rinsing your mouth with mouthwash doesn’t mean ditching the toothbrush or floss. Mouthwash is an addition to your dental routine. Not everyone uses mouthwash, but everyone should be brushing and flossing their teeth regularly for good oral health.

Mouthwash Has Different Types

Mouthwash comes in two varieties: cosmetic and therapeutic. Cosmetic mouthwashes come in several different flavors and nice scents for a temporary benefit of masking bad breath. For patients with gingivitis or dry mouth,  your Phoenix, AZ dentist prescribes therapeutic mouthwash. Therapeutic mouthwash can only be bought with a dentist’s prescription, so contact our office today for an appointment.

Mouthwash Is Not for Children

Fluoride is a common ingredient in mouthwash. But increased fluoride exposure leads to fluorosis, a condition that affects teeth while they’re developing permanent molars. Another reason why it’s not advised for children under six years to use mouthwash is the potential to swallow the product.

To Extract or Not: Wisdom Tooth Edition

Wisdom teeth are usually synonymous with pain, infection, crowding, and swollen gums. The general solution to these issues is extraction. But what if you don’t experience any of those symptoms? At Kidz Connextion located in Phoenix, AZ, we provide expert care for wisdom teeth, from extractions to dental hygiene.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth typically grow in the 17-25 age years, emerging in the upper and lower back areas of the mouth. Since they are the last to appear in the human mouth, they’ve garnered the title “wisdom” and presumably make you wiser. Wisdom teeth were once very useful in human history, aiding our ancestors to chew and tear tough roots, meats, nuts, and plants. But because most of the human diet today is soft and cooked foods, the need for wisdom is virtually none, with anthropologists suggesting their DNA may soon completely disappear from genetics.

When to Extract?

When a wisdom tooth can’t break through the gums or is stuck under the gums, this means it’s impacted. A wisdom tooth that grows at the wrong angle due to lack of room in the mouth also is impacted. Partially impacted wisdom teeth, which only slightly emerge from the gums are also a cause for concern.

Your Phoenix, AZ dentist recommends an extraction when your wisdom tooth is impacted and you experience the following symptoms:

-Pain

-Infection

-Ulcers near the tooth

-Tooth decay

-Damage to nearby teeth

-Gum disease

-Trouble opening jaw

-Bleeding gums

-Sudden bad breath

Sometimes wisdom teeth, even if not impacted, don’t need to be removed because they cause no oral health issues. Here are examples of when you don’t need an extraction:

-Your wisdom teeth are healthy and fully grown in

-Your wisdom teeth are positioned correctly

-Your wisdom teeth are easily reached for proper dental hygiene

How to Clean Your Retainer

Retainers are essential for maintaining your teeth’s position after braces are removed. These dental appliances are worn lifelong to prevent the natural shifting of teeth. But irregularly sterilizing your retainer can wreak havoc on your oral health. At Kidz Connextion located in Phoenix, AZ, your dentist provides special attention to braces aftercare. Here are some tips and tricks to keep your retainer clean for an amazing smile.

There are three types of retainers on-the-market: Hawley wire, clear and permanent bonded retainers. Each retainer varies in terms of hygiene care.

Hawley Wire Retainers:

Hawley wire retainers are the standard retainers at Kidz Connextion. Made of hard acrylic or plastic with a metal wire, these retainers are removable and durable. This is why Hawley retainers are the easiest to clean.

The best way to wash your Hawley retainer is under lukewarm water and mild soap. If you notice plaque or debris on the surface of your retainer, don’t be afraid to scrub very gently with a toothbrush or cotton swab.

Clear Retainers:

Invisalign and Essix retainers both fall into this category. While clear retainers are also removable, the interior surfaces of the appliance are harder to disinfect.

Like Hawley retainers, sanitize clear retainers soon as you remove them. When dry, bacteria and debris are harder to unclog on the surface of retainers.

Permanent Bonded Retainers:

These retainers are the hardest to clean because they’re permanently fixed to your teeth. Usually bonded to the back of the molars, these teeth are difficult to floss between the permanent retainer. Your Phoenix, AZ dentist recommends a floss threader to weave between your retainer.

Additional Tips:

Retainers need to be handled gently to preserve for long-term use. This means staying away from any harsh cleaners and rough scrubbing.

If you want a deeper clean for your retainer or notice bacteria stuck on the surface, bring your device to our office for special cleaning.

Thumbsucking and Oral Health

Does your child suck their thumb? Thumbsucking is a normal reflex that many young children practice for comfort and relaxation. But prolonged thumbsucking can affect your child’s oral health, resulting in issues like misaligned teeth. With three locations in Phoenix, AZ, Kidz Connextion is passionate about your child’s oral health, from thumbsucking to cavities. Call our office today if you have any questions.

Thumbsucking and Your Child’s Teeth

Passive thumbsucking which is simply holding the thumb in the mouth doesn’t damage the teeth. But thumbsucking with a lot of motion or active thumbsucking causes misaligned teeth, damage to the roof of the mouth, and changes to the shape of the jawbone such as overbite issues.

Thumbsucking becomes an issue when your child’s first tooth appears. Your Phoenix, AZ dentist sees patients as early as 12 months, so contact the Kidz Connextion offices to address thumbsucking right away.

How to Stop Your Child’s ThumbSucking

Typically, children stop sucking their thumbs between the ages of two to four. If thumbsucking continues past these ages, there are several ways to help wean your child off this habit:

-Include praise or positive reinforcement when your child doesn’t suck their thumb

-Focus on alleviating anxiety. Since thumbsucking is as a source of comfort when children are anxious, try to eliminate that anxiety.

-Involve your child in the process. If you have an older child who is still thumbsucking include them in the process to stop this habit, by setting gentle reminders and goals to accomplish.

If your child’s thumbsucking habit is still a concern, contact our Kidz Connextion offices in Phoenix, AZ today. Your dentist can prescribe medication or devices to hinder your child from sucking their thumb.

Oral Health and Heart Disease

In a 2018 study conducted by the American Heart Association (AHA), poor oral health was shown to be linked to several cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension. With three locations in Phoenix, AZ, Kidz Connextion specializes in fostering good oral health habits to prevent illnesses like heart disease.

The Heart and Your Oral Health: How Are They Connected?

Many studies prove the link between heart health and dental habits. One study published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology revealed that people who have gum disease or periodontal disease have higher risks of developing heart disease. But gum disease isn’t the only condition that can lead to heart disease. Poor brushing habits can also lead to heart conditions, according to findings presented at the AHA’s 2018 Scientific Session.

Researchers have two theories of how oral health and the heart are connected. One way the two are connected is through the body’s bloodstream. Harmful bacteria in the mouth can spread through your bloodstream to the heart, elevating C reactive proteins that are associated with heart attacks. Another theory is heart disease is your brain and body’s response to inflammation and plaque buildup in the gums and teeth.

Prevention Is the Best Medicine

Your Phoenix, AZ dentist recommends healthy habits to prevent heart disease. These include:

-Eating a healthy diet chock full of fruits and vegetables. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and rinse out plaque.

-Regular visits to the dentist. At Kidz Connextion, we stay alert for heart disease indicators and provide thorough dental cleanings to reduce your mouth’s dangerous bacteria.

-Proper brushing and flossing. Make sure to brush and floss at least twice a day.

-Avoid smoking and tobacco use. These substances are not just bad for your oral and heart health, but your entire body, so it’s best to stay away.

Fluorosis

Do your child’s teeth look different? White spots or pits? Your child may have fluorosis, a condition that’s caused by increased fluoride exposure while the teeth are growing into permanent molars. With three locations in Phoenix, AZ, Kidz Connextion treats a variety of dental conditions, including fluorosis.

Cause

Fluorosis is caused by overexposure of fluoride on your child’s teeth during the first eight years of their life.

Fluoride is a natural ingredient present in products like toothpaste, water, soda, juice, and mouthwash. Your Phoenix, AZ dentist rounded up some tips for limiting fluoride intake:

-Avoid soda and juice.

-Use a toothpaste amount no smaller than a grain of rice for children under age three. For older children apply a pea-size amount.

-Fluoride levels in water normally don’t affect teeth. If your community’s water source contains high amounts of fluoride, consider other water sources like bottled water.

-Keep mouthwash away from children under the age of six.

Symptoms

-Yellow or dark brown discoloration

-White pits or spots

-Ridges around the teeth

Although fluorosis has no serious oral health effects, symptoms are permanent without treatment. For some patients, the changes in appearance are a source of shame or loss of confidence.

Treatment

We offer a variety of cosmetic treatments for both adults and children who have fluorosis at our Phoenix, AZ office:

-Crowns

-Veneers

-White Fillings (Bonding)

Everything You Need to Know About Laughing Gas

Nitrous oxide or commonly known as laughing gas is used in health care facilities to reduce pain and numb patients during a variety of treatments including surgery. At Kidz Connextion we use laughing gas to provide a safe and effective environment for your child during dental procedures. Here’s everything you need to know about laughing gas before you book your next appointment today at one of our three Phoenix, AZ locations!

What Is Laughing Gas?

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas is a colorless odorless substance mixed with nitrogen and oxygen. This sedation method has been used for centuries and was first discovered in 1793 by English scientist Joseph Priestly.

How It Works

Before undergoing a procedure that uses laughing gas sedation, avoid eating a big meal at least three hours beforehand. Your Phoenix, AZ dentist will fit a small mask over your nose to inhale the nitrous oxide gas. The sedation effects only take a few minutes after you breathe normally through the mask. Nitrous oxide gas does not put you to sleep, so you will still be able to hear sounds and see what is going on. Instead of feeling anxious and worried during your dental treatment, laughing gas causes euphoria and an increased level of relaxation.

Once the mask is removed, your lungs will need a few minutes to receive oxygen again and your body will be alert in no time.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of nitrous oxide include mental confusion and tingling or numbness of the limbs. The chances of negative side effects are very low, with patients experiencing fatigue, vomiting, shivering, or sweating when nitrous oxide dosage levels were too high or inhaled quickly. At Kidz Connextion, our dentists and staff are skilled in administering laughing gas and will be at your side every step of the way.

Effects

Laughing gas has three effects for patients:

-Pain reduction

-Increased levels of euphoria, so you’re relaxed

-Decreased anxiety and dental phobia

Is Laughing Gas Safe for Children?

With new technologies in health practices, laughing gas is widely known as a safe sedation method for children. Talk to your Phoenix, AZ dentist to find out if you’re child is a candidate for laughing gas today.
